EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

OAXACA / MEXICO

It is a world where shadow merges with light. It is a time when the living rub shoulders with the deceased. Photographer Nicolas Feuillet is our guide for El Dia De Los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead. When night comes to Oaxaca, his lens surprises the ghosts that haunt the streets. Frightening and morbid beings who gradually become endearing. Their expressions are dreamy. Anguish gives way to nostalgia. Young and old alike wear mummy or skeleton costumes. The skulls are next to the flowers. Food is placed as an offering on tombs lit by candles. Piety rubs shoulders with the layman. They are strong images, bathed in human warmth and mystical symbolism. We see a whole people there who apply themselves to play on the taboo of death.
